The establishment of the RPD-Gjakova 01.01.2015

The responsibility area of the Regional Directorate in Gjakova or its territory is determined according to the judiciary divisions, and this includes the municipality of Gjakova, Reahovec and Malisheva.

This area covers the southwest part of Kosovo, respectively it is extended in the middle part of Dukagjin, surrounded by hills and mountains above the sea level from 365-265 m, with a moderate continental climate with weakened influence of the Mediterranean climate, rich hydrographic network, natural and cultural heritage, agricultural land of high quality pasture, meadows, tradition in cultivating fruits and vineyards, apticulture, poultry, distinguished for its traditional handicrafts.

Two border crossings with Albania, in Qafa e Prushit and Morina as well as two other temporary seasonal crossing points, makes this Region as a bearer of economic developments and a center and corridor that connects this part and the major part of Kosovo with Albania.

This region has its own specifics starting from its area which is 1109 km², with 165 villages and three cities, with about 205,377 inhabitants, with its geographical position and facilities of special importance.

It has a great number of primary, secondary schools, State University and two private Colleges. In those institutions, beside the students from Gjakova, respectively from the Region and other cities of Kosovo, it has also lot of students from Albania.                

In this region we have facilities of special importance such as: Prosecutions, Courts, Municipal Assemblies, various markets, KP buildings, KPT facilities, a large number of banks and Shopping Centers, sport halls, religious and historical cult facilities.

In this region, in Gjakova and other cities as well, we have a large number of Industrial Facilities, recently it is planned that Gjakova soon be a free economic zone, where there will be businesses and investors not only local ones but from the Europe and beyond as well.

We have the regional hospital “Isa Grezda” which is also frequented by lot of citizens from Albania cities such as: Bajram Curri and Kruma.

Airport of Gjakova it is soon expected to be activated which will have its own specifics in the security aspect as well.

We also have the Radoniq Lake that is not only a special asset of Gjakova but also of the whole Kosovo, which is used for drinking and irrigation of agricultural land and vineyards.

This region except the land routes that connect lot of Kosovo cities is also connected with Albania and has a part of railway and highway.

Traffic safety

The responsibility area of the Gjakova region possesses 201 km motorway and regional roads by not including a part of highway, in general the local and regional asphalted roads are 306 km.

RESPONSIBILITY AREA OF GJAKOVA

Gjakova municipality covers a surface of 586.91 km2 including 91 resident areas. According to the recent census of 2011, Gjakova municipality has a population of 94,556 residents.

Gjakova municipality lies in the geographical area of Dukagjin, which is located between mountains of: Pashtrik, Mokrra Gora and Sharri, in altitude of 360 m up to 2650 m, over the sea level.

Valleys of the rivers Drini i Bardhë, Erenik, Krena and Trakaniqi, as well as some streams, creates some plains where most of them are arable and fertile.

Areas, spaces and facilities of special importance in the Gjakova municipality for Kosovo are:

Division of the responsibility area in Section

The terrain coverage in this area is divided into four (4) Sections, respectively into three sections of rural areas and one Section of the city which is divided into four smaller parts.

Division of Sections is done according to the characteristics of responsibility area and best real possibilities for their coverage.

RESPONSIBILITY AREA – RAHOVEC

The territory of Rahovec municipality has a surface of 282 km² this territory consists of 35 residencies in total including Rahovec city.

Based on the census results of the first half of 2011, and according to the official data of this municipality, in total, there are 56.208residents living in 82.268 families and 13.000 non-residents.   

In 1 km²,there lives in total 202 (residents and non-residents)

National structure of population

In the territory of Rahovec municipality, based on the official data, in totoal there lives 56,208 residents, 95% of them Albanians, 3% Serbians and 2% (Roman, Ashkali and Egyptians). Serbian minority mainly lives in the North neighbor of Rahovec, village Hoqë e Madhe and Zoqisht (in Zoqishte lives only the monastery staff).

Permanent physical security during 24 hours is provided by Kosovo Police in the orthodox monastery in Zoqishte but not from the police officers of this Station but from UCRH currently in Prizren.

 Roads and railways

In the responsibility area of SP Rahovec lies the highway Gjakovë-Prizren (12 km) which is overloaded with traffic, highway Gjakove-Kramovik-Kline (6 km), then regional roads Xërxe-Rahovec-Malishevë (17 km), Xërxe-Ratkoc-Kramovik (18 km), Rahovec-Brestoc-Krushë e Madhe (10 km), Rahovec-Opterush-Suharekë (7 km) and Rahovec-Drenoc-Polluzh-Çifllak (10 km) as well as lot of other local roads.

In the responsibility area of SP Rahovec also lies the railway which comes toward Fushë Kosovë-Klinë-Kramovik- Xërxe-Prizren which in our responsibility area is 35 km longtitude.

There are lots of infrastructure facilities of railways and platforms which currently are out of function.

The railway track goes only at Xërxe and that only during the summer season from Sillos to Xërxe, while the railway to prizren is blocked, there are lots of problems due to some damages of railway infrastructure and non-maintenance by the Directorate of Railways.

RESPONSIBILITY AREA  MALISHEVË

Malisheva municipality lies in the central part of Kosovo, and is between the main centers (cities) of Kosovo, in a distance approximately equal. Malisheva municipality has a surface of 306.3 km², it has 44 rezident areas with over 54.613 residents, or 209 residents in 1 km2 (Malisheva (Administrational Center), is connected with the highway Prishtinë-Pejë, in a distance of 11 km, and with the highway Prishtinë-Prizren, in a distance of 15 km.

Malisheva is bordered with six neighboring municipalities: Klina, Skenderaj, Drenas, Lipjan, Suhareka and Rahovec.

In the Malisheva city as a municipal and administrative center, live around 3.600 residents, while the rest of population lives in 43 rezident areas -other villages.

Malisheva area is characterized with the following specifics:

• Malisheva municipality is characterized with the river Mirusha and waterfall “Mirusha”
• With the thermal source in Banja village, the water capacity in this source is 120 1/sec. The temperature of this water is 22⁰C, constant during the whole year.
